Banyan 

The old banyan in front of the Fan-jian Study accompanies the Study for years. The banyan has a big shade, with Ficus Virgata and Epipremnum pinnatum climbing along. It integrates the natural scene of the sub-tropical zone to the garden and makes the public to think when they enter the time gallery and experience the floating atmosphere from this combination of time and nature.

 

 

Tree of Kings 

It
s not tall but its trunk is straight. Its big leaves on the top of its trunk create the sense of gradation. Moreover, with its various change of the color of its leaves, such the plant can make the scenery more attractive. It is often used withthe stone scene for the gardening. Therefore, this plant is very common in the traditional garden.

 

Camellia 

The camellia is very common in the traditional garden. It is a kind of forever-green shrub, about one to three meters tall. There are various kinds of camellia with color of red, pink, rose, purple-white, pink-white. They also have spots, lines, or combinations of colors. Its petal can be distinguished as a single petal or double ones.

 

 

Mango Tree 

The preserved mango with sugar and salt once was the favorite of the country kids who could not afford to buy the snacks. The acid and sweet flavor of this fruit often goes with the memory of the childhood. The mango, originating from India and Malaysia is imported to Taiwan in the XVII century by the Dutchmen.

Larged- leaved Banyan 

The banyan with big leaves is currently known as the big tree. The leaves fall very frequently and annually, about two to four times a year. Soon after its leaves fall, there will be new buds coming out of the branch. The branch will be packed by the white and big stipules that are used for protection. When the new leaves grow, the branches fall to the ground like petals.

Japanese White- eyes 

If you hear the voice like the piccolo from the tree and see above, you might find the slim and graceful Japanese White- eyes. The major character of this bird is its white line along its eyes. From its head to tail, it is yellow and green. Its throat and tail end are covered by yellow feathers. Its chest and belly are gray and white, while its beak and feet are black.

 Autumn Maple Tree 

It’s the typical plant of the tropical rainforest. It’s very common in the south of Taiwan. On the Taiwanese old tree lists, the autumn maple trees is one of the top three. There are gnarls in dark color in its trunk.


 

 

Sapium sebiferum (L.) Roxb 

It is a big tree. Its leaves are in lovely diamond shape and they fall regularly. Every time when the leaves turn red in the autumn, the nature lovers often pick them up as bookmarks. It belongs to Euphorbiaceae. Its major characteristic is the white juice. You have to wash hands to avoid allergy after you touch it.

Azalea Rhododendron 

Currently, the azaleas planted in the garden are the specific ones for gardening, including Rhododendron spp., Rhododendron mucronatum, Kurume Hybrids, and Satsuki Hybrids. The first two kinds are the major azaleas planted in the garden.

 

Peach Tree 

It’s a small tree. Its leaves will fall accordingly. The peach tree, plum tree, and prune tree come from the same family. In addition to the differences in the color of flower, the size of their leaves is different, too. Putting their trees together, you will find the leave of the peach tree is the longest.  While the leave of the plum tree is the shortest, the leave of the prune tree is in the middle.



Prunus mume

Plum trees can definitely be admired in the traditional garden, and of course, the garden is no exception; it is native to China. From 1661 to 1974, it was introduced to Taiwan from South China and Japan to form a cash crop.

Java Apple 

The Java apple in the garden is the spotlight of the lawn from Yue-Po-Shui-Hsieh to the garden. This plant is imported by Dutchmen from Java Island. Its name in Taiwanese, lenmu, comes from the translation from the Indonesian, jumbo. Such plant is a very common fruit tree in the plain of the low altitude above sea level in Taiwan.

 

Oxalis corymbosa DC 

It’s the most popular flower in the garden and belongs to the Oxalis corniculata L. It’s a herbaceous plant. Although we can see its flowers all year round, it’s difficult to have the fruit in Taiwan due to the fact that it’s foreign species for which it multiplies by its underground runner.

Bambusa ventricosa Mcclure 

The low wall keep the Wunchang Street away from the garden. Yet, the bambusa ventricosa Mcclure is planted next to the wall, which highlights the peaceful atmosphere inside. Such plant is also known as Bamboo of the Buddha, the Belly of the Buddha or Bamboo of Calabash in Chinese due to its irregular shape in stem like the calabash. It is 1.5 to 2 meters high.   Its stem has two kinds. The regular one is longer, while the irregular one is shorter between section and bloats like the belly of the Buddha
 . 


Grey Treepie 

Grey Treepie is the specific species in Taiwan. The male and female birds have almost at the same size and the similar body colors. They are all black in the forehead, cheek, and tail. They have black wings with white spots. They are gray like the mouse from the top of the head to the neck. They are mousy in the back and gray in the waist and the upper feather of the tail. They are dun in the throat and the upper chest. They are gray in the lower chest, white in the belly, brick red in the feather covering the tail. Their beak and feet are gray and white.

Spotted Dove 

It is the specific species in Taiwan and very similar to the pigeon. The male and female birds are alike in the body color and size. Its name originates from the black and white spots in its back neck. It is foxy in the body and gray black in beak. It has red feet. It is gray in head and black in tail with white line outside.
